Tom Brady had a significant role during the Celtics' meeting with Durant
As the dust settles after a chaotic first week of NBA free agency, more details are emerging about the conversations and emotions that surrounded players as they made their blockbuster agreements. Like the fact that Dwyane Wade hardly slept.
And then there's the week's biggest free agency move: Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors. Turns out the Boston Celtics also came away from its Hamptons meeting thinking they had a serious chance to sign KD. And that was helped by the fact that they brought Tom Brady along for the ride.
When the photo of Brady, walking with Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, co-owner Steve Pagliuca, and players Kelly Olynyk and Marcus Smart surfaced, it wasn't clear exactly how much the Patriots quarterback was involved in the recruitment. Turns out, the four-time Super Bowl champion wasn't just there for show.
Ainge told the Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy that they went into the meeting figuring they didn't have much of a shot at Durant, and came away believing it was a real possibility.
Obviously, the Warriors clearly had a good meeting with KD as well. But Brady and the Celtics must have done something right.
Ainge said the younger Celtics players also relished the opportunity to talk to Brady about fitness and training. No doubt the initial consultation was free. But if they want to know more, it'll cost $200 for TB12's official nutrition manual.
