Stan Van Gundy, Pistons look to add mental coach
The Stan Van Gundy era is only barely underway for the Detroit Pistons. About a year ago, the team gave the former Orlando Magic head coach a lucrative deal to coach the team and lead all basketball operations.
Van Gundy's first season in Detroit would probably be best termed as "experimental," with a rotating door of players augmenting Andre Drummond and Greg Monroe as Van Gundy looked for the right pieces.
Now, he's looking for the right mindset among his roster, and he's seeking help from a specialist. According to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press, Van Gundy is thinking about hiring a mental coach.
"Somebody that helps you develop routines and programs and practices to help you, in terms of concentration in games, things like that," Van Gundy told Ellis. "That person may or may not be a full-time person with the team. It could be a consultant. We haven't really worked through that role, but we have talked to one person there and will talk to others."
Maybe this new coach can help Drummond with his free throws—he shot a poor 39 percent from the stripe in 2014-15, one of the worst marks in the league.
