Report: Spurs, Danny Green agree to 4-year, $45 million deal
Danny Green is an essential two-way cog who's helped make the San Antonio Spurs one of the league's very best teams over the past few seasons. There was a real fear he'd leave as an unrestricted free agent this summer, but those fears have officially disappeared.
This is a fair deal for both sides. Green makes the money at about what he's worth on the open market (perhaps a bit less) and the Spurs keep their starting shooting guard.
As one of the best 3-and-D players in basketball, Green's value is immense, but no team accentuates his skills like the Spurs. Their roster helps mask his flaws and lets him shine in a way few other teams ever can. This is great news all around.
How does it affect their pursuit of LaMarcus Aldridge? Well, Tiago Splitter is reportedly on his way to the Atlanta Hawks, which means they're on the verge of clearing enough space for a max contract, pending whatever Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili's new deals look like.
Losing an injury-prone, 30-year-old starting center appears to be the cost of chasing a superstar and retaining incredibly valuable role players. San Antonio has now locked up Kawhi Leonard and Green. Their future looks unfairly bright.
