Report: Collins' ex stunned by news
Jason Collins stunned everyone Monday, when he revealed that he is gay in a personal essay in Sports Illustrated. And by everyone, we mean everyone — even his ex-fiancee, according to one report.
According to the gossip website TMZ, Collins, who most recently played for the Washington Wizards, dated former WNBA player Carolyn Moos for seven years, and the two were engaged before breaking up in 2009.
Moos played on the women’s team at Stanford while Collins was a member of the Cardinal men’s team. She was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury in the fourth round of the 2001 WNBA Draft.
She told the site that she never once suspected that Collins was gay, and that she only found out over the weekend, when Collins revealed his secret and told her that his sexuality was the reason he ended their relationship.
"It's very emotional for me as a woman to have invested 8 years in my dream to have a husband, soul mate, and best friend in him," Moos said. "So this is all hard to understand."
That said, Moos doesn't appear resentful toward Collins in light of his announcement.
"I care about [Jason] tremendously and only want the best for him," Moos told the site. "I want Jason to be happy for a lifetime and stay true to who he really is, inside and out."
