Pierce sticking with Celtics

Paul Pierce will remain in Boston.

According to a source close to the situation, Boston’s captain has agreed to a four-year, $61 million deal to remain with the Celtics.

All four years are guaranteed.

Pierce decided to opt out of his contract and become a free agent, but never truly explored the open market.

"It was a smart business decision,” said one source.

Pierce, 32, was set to make $21.5 million next season, but with the uncertainty regarding the new Collective Bargaining Agreement and expected changes within the salary structure, Pierce opted out and wanted a long-term deal.

The deal was first reported by the Boston Herald.

The new contract won’t be official until July 7 under NBA rules.

Now that Pierce and coach Doc Rivers are back in the fold, Celtics boss Danny Ainge will set his sights on trying to bring Ray Allen back and also landing a mid-level free agent to make another run at an NBA title.

Pierce averaged 18.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game last season and has played his entire 12-year career in Boston.
