NBA Rumors: Kevin Garnett talking to Cavs, Bucks about coaching job

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

After retiring from the NBA in September, Kevin Garnett has made himself a very busy man.

In September, Kevin Garnett announced his retirement from the NBA after spending 21 years in the league with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, and Brooklyn Nets. Garnett, who played his first 12 years with Minnesota and returned there via trade in 2015, played one final full season with the Wolves in 2015-16 before calling it a career.

As for what’s next, Garnett is lining up his post-playing life pretty quickly. TNT played a promo on Thursday announcing that he would join their NBA coverage on Nov. 4. However, this isn’t the only thing that the 40-year-old will be doing.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, Garnett is talking to teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks about potentially becoming a coaching consultant. It’s possible he joins more than one organization as well to work with players.

This will certainly make Garnett a busy man for the months and years to come. He’ll be able to coach the youth of today’s NBA. Karl-Anthony Towns, who’s becoming one of the league’s best big men, got to learn from the future Hall of Famer in his rookie season. If more rising stars like him can learn from one of the greatest power forwards of all-time, it can only help.

As for Garnett as an analyst, he’s joining Ernie Johnson, former Houston Rockets star Kenny Smith, NBA legend Charles Barkley, and four-time NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal.

This is already a group that is known for its chemistry, so we’ll see how well KG fits into the mix. Adding him to the team could be in preparation for Barkley potentially leaving Inside the NBA or Smith taking a coaching job (he was linked to the Rockets’ job last offseason).

Next Thursday, we’ll get to see Kevin Garnett in an unusual environment. If he does become a coach, though, his impact will still be felt on the court.
