Due to their barrage of injuries, the Memphis Grizzlies have been granted an injury exception. Veteran point guard Toney Douglas will join the team.

The Memphis Grizzlies are without Mike Conley, Brandan Wright, Chandler Parsons, James Ennis and Zach Randolph (bereavement). Fellow Beale Street Bears writer Jack Spillman has stated, “It’s like last year but with max contracts.”

The Memphis Grizzlies must get a good break at some point, right? Well, the NBA has rewarded the Grizz an “injury exception.” With rookies Andrew Harrison and Wade Baldwin covering for Conley, a veteran point guard was at the top of the Christmas list. Luckily, for Memphis, Christmas came early, as they’ll sign Toney Douglas this weekend.

Toney Douglas and his fit with the Grizz

For his career, Toney Douglas is averaging 7.8 points on 36 percent shooting from downtown.

Last season, Toney Douglas appeared in 61 games for the New Orleans Pelicans. In 20 minutes per game, he scored 8.7 points, dished out 2.6 assists and shot a career-best 39.9 percent from 3-point territory.

Toney Douglas should give the Grizzlies a veteran point guard who could lead the Conley-less offense. In addition, he can be another threat from beyond the arc.

There have been plenty of concerns whether the Grizzlies will fall with rookies at point guard. Because of Toney Douglas, they will be able to allow the Baldwin and Harrison to grow, while having a veteran to run the offense in times of chaos.

Once Conley comes back, if he’s playing well, the Grizzlies may make a move to keep him. In that case, he could either play alongside Conley or lead the second unit.

Because of his style of play, he fits into the Grit ‘n Grind moniker. Furthermore, his skill-set could be thrusted into Mario Chalmers’ role as veteran perimeter spark-plug.

The “Nasty Nine” era has been a fun ride, but now, help has arrived.

Welcome to Memphis, Toney Douglas.
