Kyle Anderson named MVP of Las Vegas Summer League
On Sunday, San Antonio Spurs forward Kyle Anderson was named the Most Valuable Player of Las Vegas Summer League. Anderson led his team to a 5-1 record and the league's championship game against the Phoenix Suns on Monday.
He was one of the most efficient players in attendance, averaging 22 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. More awesome than the numbers was Anderson's playing style. He goes at his own pace yet still manages to get where he wants. The "Slow-Mo" nickname is apt.
Here's what Anderson recently said to ESPN's Michael C. Wright:
"I had a tough May and June of working hard, not really competing against people. But to finally get out here and compete, I just want to show all the work I've put in to myself since June and May. [I'm] just coming out here to have fun, play basketball, find some mistakes that I've made during these games so I can correct them for when October rolls around. I think I've improved tremendously since the first day I got drafted. I think I didn't really know a lot about the NBA game coming into the season last year. I think I know a little bit more, but there's still room to improve, still a lot to learn."
The Spurs are absolutely loaded, but Anderson may be able to carve out room as Kawhi Leonard's backup. His role will be so much different during the regular season, and his outside shot will need to be on point.
But Anderson has talent with the ball in his hands, and it's up to Gregg Popovich to figure out a way to put last year's first-round pick in the best position to succeed.
