Hawks' Korver nears NBA record

Watch out, Dana Barros: Kyle Korver is right behind you.

Maybe you haven’t been following this story enough to know what we’re talking about. In fact, maybe you don’t even remember Dana Barros.

The Atlanta Hawks’ Korver has made at least one three-point field goal in 83 consecutive games. He’s No. 2 all-time but has nearly caught NBA record-holder Barros, who went 89 in a row. (Quick refresher: Barros, a 5-foot-11 point guard, played for four teams in 14 seasons, last appearing in 2004.)

As streaks go, this chase hasn’t exactly attracted the attention of Cal Ripken’s countdown to surpass Lou Gehrig’s consecutive games played or Drew Brees’ pursuit of Johnny Unitas’ touchdown pass record.

In fact, Korver didn’t seem all that hyped about it himself when he spoke to The New York Times about it last season when the streak was at 70. “I don’t really care,” he said. “The only thing I like about it is that it shows a level of consistency.”

Korver, 32, is in his 11th season as a pro, and the Hawks are his fourth team. This season marks the fourth when he’s been a starter. At 6-7, he plays small forward or shooting guard. His 13.3 scoring average this season is the second-highest of his career, behind the 14.4 he had with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2006-07.

Korver has led the NBA in 3-pointers made once and in 3-point percentage once. He ranks No. 12 all-time in career 3-point percentage at .420, sixth among active players. Korver is 27th in career 3-pointers, though he could reach the top 20 by the end of this season.
