Curry trying to trim errors;WARRIORS 100, BLAZERS 78
Warriors point guard Stephen Curry isn't one to make willy-nilly promises.
That's why it's so odd that sitting out most of the fourth quarter was the only thing that allowed him to keep this one.
Coming off an eight-turnover game at Portland on Saturday, Curry promised it wouldn't happen again. Then, he committed six turnovers in the Warriors' 100-78 victory over the Trail Blazers on Monday night at Oracle Arena.
The 14 turnovers in the last two games are part of a training-camp-long problem. Curry has 28 assists to 28 turnovers in the shortened playing time of five preseason games. That equates to 9.1 turnovers per 48 minutes.
Curry played 80 games last season and committed more than seven turnovers in a game only once 10, Feb. 19 at Utah. In the final 10 games of his rookie season, he had 78 assists, 32 turnovers and 22 steals.
"It's me trying to create a play instead of reading the play correctly," Curry said. "It's working the kinks out of the new lineup and figuring out where people are going to be.
"But, I'm not panicking."
In many ways, then-coach Don Nelson's freestyling isolation sets and pick-and-roll offense protected Curry as he adjusted to the toughest position in the league as a rookie.
New coach Keith Smart is running more half-court sets, with a motion offense subbed for the pick-and-roll game. As Curry learns the new offense, he also is learning the tendencies of an overhauled roster.
With less spacing on the floor and the necessity of precise timing to connect with cutting teammates, Curry has looked out of sorts at times.
"It can look really bad," Curry said. "I've just made a bunch of bad and wrong decisions that I won't make anymore."
Smart isn't ready to overreact, either.
"It bothers me, but it's not a huge concern," Smart said. "He's a smart kid, and he'll realize not to try to make plays that aren't there."
Curry said he can see the mistakes while watching video, and he knows how to fix them. Still, many of Curry's turnovers are coming in transition and some are even off his left-handed passes, which NBA scouts view as tops in the league.
"I can know what to do, but I've got to do the right things in the heat of it," Curry said. "As a point guard, you're going to have turnovers, but it's up to me to limit them and not have any that are unforced."
Injuries: Backup center Lou Amundson had surgery to repair his broken right index finger. The Warriors say he will begin rehab immediately, but gave no timeline for his return. Online medical journals suggest he'll miss one to four months. ... Reggie Williams missed his second straight game with a tweaked groin.
