Cavaliers are reportedly giving a championship ring to former head coach David Blatt
The Cavaliers fired head coach David Blatt in January, when the team was sitting with a 30-11 record atop the Eastern Conference. Tyronn Lue was promoted to replace him, and he was able to guide the team to its first-ever NBA title.
There are evidently no lingering hard feelings over the job Blatt did in a season-and-a-half on the job. The Cavaliers (via Jason Lloyd of Ohio.com) have ordered a championship ring for their former head coach.
David Blatt is getting one more parting gift from the Cavaliers: a championship ring.
Blatt was fired at the midpoint of the Cavs’ championship season, but the team has ordered a ring for him, too, multiple sources confirmed to the Beacon Journal.
This is certainly a nice gesture from the franchise, but it seems like an odd decision. Blatt was head coach for less than two full seasons, and obviously was long gone by the time the 2016 team rounded into its championship state.
It's worth wondering whether this opens the door for the team to grant Anderson Varejao a ring, as well. Varejao played into his 12th Cavaliers season, before being traded in February in a three-team deal that brought Channing Frye to Cleveland.
After Varejao was waived by the Blazers, though, he signed with Golden State, and even logged limited minutes against his former team in the NBA Finals -- which would make the idea of him receiving a ring even more outlandish.
