76ers paying McGee, Wallace $22.1 million not to play for them this season
The 76ers waived Gerald Wallace on Saturday, who was acquired as part of the deal that sent them Jason Thompson to the Warriors.
But the team never had any intention of keeping him.
Philadelphia also received cash and draft considerations in the deal, because as a rebuilding team with the majority of players on the roster on rookie scale contracts, they have plenty of salary cap space available to help other teams out if the price is right.
There's a minimum salary each team has to pay each season, so in Philly's case, paying Wallace $10.1 million not to play really doesn't matter. But when you combine that with the $12 million the team will be paying to JaVale McGee, who was waived back in March under similar circumstances, that total of $22.1 million in dead payroll dollars will at least raise a few eyebrows.
