Red Bulls forward/midfielder Mac Kandji will be sidelined for 8-12 weeks after breaking a bone in his right foot.
Kandji was hurt in training Tuesday and was to have surgery in New York on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old from Senegal started in all four league games this season and scored in the 1-0 victory at Seattle on April 3 that stopped New York's 27-game MLS regular-season road winless streak.
His spot in the starting lineup appears likely to go to Denmark's Brian Nielsen, acquired last week on loan from Denmark's Vejle.
