KAMAS, Utah (AP) Eric Young sprinted to victory in the fifth stage of the Tour of Utah on Friday, while defending champion Tom Danielson protected his lead in the overall standings.

The peloton brought back a breakaway shortly after riders hit a section of dirt roads with less than 10 miles left. Young's Optum-Kelly Benefit Strategies team positioned him well in the run-out, and he finished ahead of SmartStop's Jure Kocjan and UnitedHealthcare's Kiel Reijnen.

The sixth stage Saturday could ultimately decide the overall race winner.

Riders will depart from Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City and climb nearly 13,000 feet of elevation, including 7,000 feet in the final 35 miles. The 107-mile route finishes at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort.
