Sophomore quarterback Jordan Webb has been chosen to start Kansas' season opener against McNeese State on Sept. 3.

Jayhawks coach Turner Gill announced the decision Friday. Webb had been competing with senior Quinn Mecham.

Webb moved into the starting lineup the second game of his freshman season, and threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Jayhawks to an upset of No. 15 Georgia Tech.

He started five more games before he was hurt against Texas A&M, and then came off the bench late in the season before starting the finale. Webb wound up throwing for 1,195 yards, the second-most by a freshman in school history, along with seven touchdowns.
