SC commit McIlwain already displaying immense leadership qualities

A Rivals.com 4-star signal-caller out of Pennsylvania, Brandon McIlwain committed to South Carolina this past New Year's Eve.

Not only is he one of South Carolina's longest-standing commitments for the 2016 class, but he's also one of the highest-ranked prospects. He chose to be a Gamecock over offers from Auburn, Cal, Clemson, Florida, Michigan State, Ohio State, and UCLA, among others.

With Steve Spurrier's sudden resignation, the current crop of '16 commitments could ultimately be looking elsewhere. The Gamecocks have 16 public pledges at this point. Demonstrating the leadership qualities of a quarterback, McIlwain is attempting to keep this class together at all costs.

"I'm excited for my future [at South Carolina]," said McIlwain. "I want to do everything I can to help South Carolina become the best it can be, whether that's being the leader in recruiting and making sure everyone keeps a cool head, or if it's reaching out to different recruits and showing them what I love about South Carolina. It's very important to me."

A group text chat exists for the committed members of the 2016 class. According to McIlwain, it's imperative for all committed prospects to keep a level head and not make any hasty decisions.

"I think it's a group that just wants to see where this is all going," said McIlwain. "We're trying to make sure no one makes real rash decisions and figures everything out before making any kind of decision."
