Orth to start at quarterback for Gamecocks on Saturday

Published Oct. 8, 2015 4:44 p.m. ET

The quarterback carousel continues to whirl 'round and 'round for South Carolina.

Former walk-on Perry Orth will start for the Gamecocks versus LSU on Saturday in Baton Rouge. A shoulder injury to fellow signal-caller Lorenzo Nunez enabled Orth to earn the start.

Nunez likely will still see some time, but one has to question how effective he'll truly be. A big portion of Nunez's game is running the football. With his injury, it likely will limit the frequency with which Nunez will take off and run.

Orth has started a game this year. While he doesn't possess the athletic ability of his teammate, Orth does have experience and possesses veteran leadership qualities. This will likely be needed for South Carolina's "home game" in Tiger Stadium. On the year, Orth has thrown for 283 yards and one touchdown. He's completing passes at a 48.9-percent clip.

With the likely absence of Nunez's production in the running game, the returns of running back Brandon Wilds and center Alan Knott are immense.
