Ohio State ex-coach Tressel applies to lead Akron
AKRON, Ohio (AP) Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has applied to become president at the University of Akron.
The school says he's among 19 applicants.
Current President Luis Proenza (proh-EN'-zah) is leaving his position in June. The school says it's accepting applications until it fills the job.
Tressel has worked as an administrator at Akron for two years. He took the job after being forced out at Ohio State following a scandal that led to NCAA sanctions.
Tressel sent Akron trustees two letters a month apart. In the first, he suggests himself as an interim leader who knows the school's challenges and could help in the transition. The second is his application to be president.
Tressel says he has 35 years of experience in higher education, including as Youngstown State's coach.
