Oregon State coaches have said they'll make their quarterback pick between Sean Mannion and Cody Vaz when one of them makes himself the clear-cut choice.
That hasn't happened yet.
Beavers coach Mike Riley will select a starting quarterback as the team prepares for its Aug. 31 opener against Eastern Washington.
A Friday scrimmage at Reser Stadium was the last of 15 spring practices for Oregon State, which had a bounce-back year in 2012 with a 9-4 record and a postseason bowl after winning a combined eight games the previous two seasons.
Mannion and Vaz each played one series in the two-hour scrimmage.
Mannion went first, going 8-11 passing for 67 yards and an interception. Vaz was 4-6 for 59 yards. His series produced a 1-yard touchdown run by Terron Ward.
''It was kind of quick, not very many plays, but it was good,'' Vaz said. ''We got some good work in, went down and scored. So I was happy with it.''
Mannion's interception, made by safety Ryan Murphy, came in the end zone as Mannion and the offense were threatening to score.
''I'm happy with how I played. Other than maybe one play I felt real sharp,'' Mannion said. ''I think all in all it's been a good spring for me. I think I've made a lot of improvement.''
Both quarterbacks came away from the spring practices feeling as though they improved. Next comes the summer, which for them will include weights, running and working with the receivers.
Brandin Cooks was the leading receiver with four catches for 38 yards. Chris Brown carried 21 times for 43 yards.
Brown got a heavy dose of carries due to injuries to other running backs sustained during the spring.
''It was good for Chris. We let a lot of those guys play a long time,'' Oregon State coach Mike Riley said. ''That was pretty hard for them, but pretty good for them, too. That's really the best way to learn. Let them get in a situation like this and let them learn and play some football.''
Mannion, a junior, has started 18 games. He started the last 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2011 and the first four in 2012 before sustaining a knee injury. Vaz, a senior, has made five starts, all in 2012.
Mannion passed for 2,446 yards in 2012, with 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 10 games. Vaz had 1,480 yards passing, 11 touchdowns and three picks in seven appearances.
Mannion was 6-2 in his eight starts in 2012 and Vaz 3-2, including the loss to Texas in the Alamo Bowl. Both took roughly the same number of snaps with the first-team offense during spring practices. Each practice was treated as a tryout of sorts.
Oregon State coaches say it will be a difficult decision when one is made. Offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf said earlier in the week he believes the Beavers have two quarterbacks with skills to be the starter.
The choice will be based on accuracy and decision-making.
Running back Storm Woods, linebacker D.J. Alexander and kicker Trevor Romaine didn't play after sustaining concussions this week.
Woods was the Beavers' leading rusher last season, with 940 yards and 13 touchdowns on 192 carries. Defensive end Scott Crichton and safety Tyrequek Zimmerman, two of the team's top tacklers in 2012, sat out all of spring practice with injuries.
