LSU lands commit from 'top linebacker on their board' in Erick Fowler

The LSU Tigers lost a former top linebacker prospect last week only to gain another over the weekend with the commitment of four-star linebacker prospect Erick Fowler.

Fowler spoke with 247 Sports shortly after committing to the Tigers.

"I just wanted to go ahead and commit and be a part of the class now, because I know a lot can happen between now and Signing Day," Fowler said. "So I called up Coach Peveto (LSU's lead area recruiter) and told him I wanted to be a Tiger. He put me on the phone with Coach Miles, and he was really happy."

LSU is currently in transition on defense following the hiring of new coordinator Kevin Steele, formerly Alabama's linebacker coach. While there have been rumblings of a potential move to a hybrid/3-4 defense, the team is down to only eight linebackers and needs to add potential playmakers at the position moving forward.

"I was the top linebacker on their board right now," Fowler continued. "They had been telling me that for a while. I see the opportunity and liked everything about LSU, so I went ahead and made my commitment to them."

Fowler is a consensus four-star prospect and holds offers from Alabama, Missouri, Texas A&M, Baylor, Michigan, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas and UCLA among others.
