Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe told his players not to let what happened against Florida State deflate them, but not to forget the beating the Seminoles handed out.
No. 5 Florida State routed Grobe's maturing Demon Deacons 52-0 a year after a more veteran Wake Forest unit upset Florida State 35-30 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
''We've kind of reversed roles a little bit,'' Grobe said. ''We're playing a lot of young kids and they're playing a lot of veteran guys.''
Wake Forest had won four of the previous six games in the series, but was no match this time.
''I don't want them to ignore this loss,'' Grobe said. ''This is not OK, but at the same time it's not the end of the world.''
The Demon Deacons (2-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) managed only 126 yards and seven first downs and simply couldn't handle Florida State's speed and trailed 38-0 at halftime.
Florida State (3-0, 1-0 ACC) scored four touchdowns in fewer than 15 minutes, including plays that covered 80, 74 and 60 yards.
''They outplayed us early,'' Grobe said. ''It was impressive watching them play.
''I told our team this week before we came here that we have the potential to be a good football team but we're not there yet,'' he said. ''After starting out with a couple of wins and especially our win over North Carolina, our team has to understand that we have a long way to go before we're a good football team.
Quarterback Tanner Price, who spent most of his afternoon scrambling for safety, agreed.
''We have to put this one behind us,'' Price said. ''Florida State's a great team and they played really well today. We still have a lot to play for.''
Price completed 8 of 22 passes for 82 yards and was sacked three times while his favorite target, Michael Campanaro, had just a pair of catches for 8 yards.
''Their front four is talented and they do a great job of putting pressure on quarterbacks,.'' Price said. ''It was pretty ugly at times.''
Campanaro had caught 22 passes in Wake Forest's first two games, but was smothered by the Seminole secondary while Price, who threw for a career-high 327 yards last week in a win over North Carolina to earn ACC offensive back of the week honors, spent the afternoon trying to stay upright.
Wake Forest returns home to host Army and Duke the next two weekends.
''We're young,'' Grobe said. ''Usually some of the younger guys bounce back quicker.''
