CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Illinois has dismissed sophomore safety Bennett Williams from the football team.

Team spokesman Derek Neal confirmed the decision late Wednesday.

Williams was suspended the first three games of the season for a violation of team rules. He returned in Week 4 against Penn State before leaving with a hamstring injury.

As a freshman last season Williams played in 11 games with seven starts at safety, recording 64 tackles with 1.5 tackles for a loss, a team-high three interceptions, two pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Williams did not travel to the team to Rutgers last week. Quarterback Cam Thomas left the program earlier this season.
