Stop Jose Mourinho before he makes Paul Pogba a 'phenomenal central defender'

For Paul Pogba fans, one of the biggest worries about his move to Manchester United was how Jose Mourinho would use the ultra-versatile, multi-talented midfielder. While his skillset does make him incredibly versatile on paper, his performances for Juventus in contrast to his time at United and appearances with the French national team have shown that he's actually best suited for a very specific midfield role with complementary players surrounding him.

It hasn't come together for Pogba yet in midfield, but that's ok. Jose Mourinho still thinks he could be a phenomenal central defender.

Now he's Mikel John Obi, and he's scored one goal in 10 years. Mourinho comes at you fast.

Mourinho hasn't yet tried Paul Pogba as a central defender. And to his credit, he's moved the young Frenchman around the pitch, and tried a few different midfield combinations to get the best out of his record signing. But on the flip side of things, time and time again this season we've seen Pogba trotting around the midfield line with clear instructions not to stray too far forward, lest he actually somehow combine with one of his teammates in attack.

Pogba started in the midfield against Manchester City, so our worst fears have been allayed thus far. This is just an offhand comment so it's not as if Mourinho is about to make Pogba a central defender. But there's still a very real and present danger that Mourinho will do his most diabolical and try to turn one of the game's most exciting players into an out-and-out defender. Any possibility is too real.

Stop it.
