The highlight of Colombia’s first World Cup appearance, in which it finished 0-1-2, was 4-4 draw with the Soviet Union. Columbia trailed 4-1 before a corner kick goal by Marcos Coll – the only goal of its kind in World Cup history – ignited a rally.

Nearly 30 years passed before Columbia played in another World Cup, but its first game of group play produced the country’s first win, a 2-0 victory over the United Arab Emirates. Columbia also tied eventual champ West Germany in the Group Stage to advance to the Round of 16, where it lost 2-1 to Cameroon.
Colombia made a second consecutive World Cup in 1994, but wasn’t able to advance to the knockout stage. Losses to Romania and the hosting United States were followed up with a 2-0 victory over Switzerland.
A third straight FIFA World Cup appearance for Columbia produced another 1-0-2 finish. Columbia defeated Tunisia 1-0 but lost 1-0 to Romania and 2-0 to England, failing to reach the Round of 16.

Columbia did not qualify for the World Cup in 2002, 2006 or 2010, but returned in 2014, when the tournament was hosted in nearby Brazil. After winning its Group Stage with a 3-0-0 record and a +7 goal differential, Columbia knocked off Uruguay 2-0 in the Round of 16. It then fell 2-1 to Brazil in the Quarter-Finals.
Can Columbia build upon its successful showing four years ago? Its fourth-place finish in the South American Football Confederation was enough to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
