It’s a huge loss for Atlanta, which has won three straight games over the Jays to move into second place in the NL East. Freeman is tied for the major-league lead with 14 homers and is slashing .341/.461/.748 with 11 doubles and 25 RBI in 37 games this season.

The hit-by-pitch was one of several tense moments in Wednesday’s game, which also included an alleged homophobic slur from Toronto center fielder Kevin Pillar (he has issued an apology) and another bat flip from Jose Bautista. Both of those situations resulting in the benches emptying.

The teams wrap up their four-game series tonight in Atlanta, meaning there could be more fireworks in the finale.
