Joel Klatt Wants Higher Bar for Group of 5 Teams in CFP: 'They Were Overmatched'

James Madison puts up valiant fight, but Group of Five teams still have much to prove in CFP

Perhaps it was James Madison going for it twice on fourth down on its first drive of the game
DECEMBER 21 • Associated Press
Chris Marshall - Nears 100 yards in defeat Marshall caught 5 of 12 targets for 97 yards during Saturday's 38-10 loss versus Washington.
Impact Marshall saw a season-high 12 targets in the blowout loss to Washington, and nearly managed to parlay that into 100 yard outing. It was a solid bow on what was a career year for the wideout; Marshall reeled in 30 catches for 574 yards and two touchdowns. He has one season of eligibility remaining.
DECEMBER 17 • ROTOWIRE
Matt Lauter - Reels in TD in loss Lauter tallied five receptions (on eight targets) for 37 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 38-10 loss to Washington.
Impact Lauter capped off a solid year with a solid performance, even as the Broncos got rolled by Washington. The tight end's production fell off from last season, when Boise State's offense was greatly inflated by the presence of superstar running back Ashton Jeanty. Still, Lauter caught 37 passes for 330 yards and two scores in 2025, and looks to be out of eligibility moving forward.
DECEMBER 17 • ROTOWIRE
Dylan Riley - Stymied by Huskies Riley recorded 10 rushes for 34 yards during Saturday's 38-10 defeat against Washington.
Impact Riley was Boise State's leading rusher in the blowout loss to Washington in the LA Bowl, but that's not saying much. Riley still had an excellent year as the lead back for the Broncos, totaling 1,125 rushing yards and 10 scores, along with 15 catches for 149 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Riley has two years of eligibility remaining and looks slated to remain the top tailback in Boise if he abstains from the portal.
DECEMBER 17 • ROTOWIRE
Sire Gaines - Completely bottled up by Huskies Gaines compiled eight carries for 16 yards and hauled in their only target for five yards during Saturday's 38-10 defeat against Washington.
Impact Gaines had a very solid year for the Broncos, and entered the LA bowl against Washington with 795 rushing yards and eight scores. However, the Huskies completely shut him down, and the entire Boise State ground game in general -- the Broncos' leading rusher was Dylan Riley with 34 yards. Still, with three years of eligibility remaining and coming off a season in which he neared 900 all-purpose yards, Gaines' future is bright.
DECEMBER 17 • ROTOWIRE
Max Cutforth - Three picks in relief of Madsen Cutforth was 15-for-27 passing for 202 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions during Saturday's 38-10 defeat to Washington.
Impact Broncos' starter Maddux Madsen was benched after a rough first half of action against Washington in which he threw two picks, and Cutforth was sent in to replace him. Cutforth didn't fare much better, throwing three interceptions as the Broncos limped to a 28-point loss in the LA Bowl. It was a rocky season for the gunslinger, who has two years of eligibility remaining.
DECEMBER 17 • ROTOWIRE
Maddux Madsen - Benched vs. Huskies Madsen completed 7 of 16 passes for 51 yards and two interceptions during Saturday's 38-10 defeat to Washington.
Impact Madsen had a rough go of it against Washington, throwing two first half picks and proceeding to get benched in favor of Max Cutforth for the second half. It was an unfortunate end to what was a down year for Madsen, as Boise State predictably took a step back in 2025 following a playoff appearance last season. Madsen still has one season of eligibility remaining, but he may look to leave the Broncos' program.

Malik Sherrod - Catches long TD pass Sherrod totaled two rushes for 11 yards and reeled in all two targets for 60 yards and one touchdown during Friday's 38-21 victory against UNLV.
Impact After catching six passes for 56 yards in the regular-season finale, Sherrod had another impactful game as a wideout. He turned his two receptions into 60 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown reception. With a bowl game against Washington left on the schedule, Sherrod has rushed 81 times for 406 yards and four touchdowns, while catching 26 passes for 244 yards and two TDs.

2025 CFB Conference Title Odds: Lines, Spreads for all 9 Games
Dylan Riley - Scores in win Riley accrued 21 rushes for 75 yards during Friday's 38-21 win over UNLV. He also had one receptions for nine yards and a touchdown.
Impact The sophomore back handled workhorse volume and supplemented his rushing output with a receiving touchdown, giving him a strong multi-category fantasy line. While he didn't break a long run, the consistent touches signal trust from the staff and a rising role in the offense. If this workload holds, Riley could finish the season as one of Boise State's most reliable fantasy contributors.
DECEMBER 6 • ROTOWIRE
Cameron Bates - Finds end zone in win Bates posted three receptions for 65 yards and one touchdown during Friday's 38-21 win versus UNLV.
Impact Bates showcased his versatility with a strong receiving line, including a key touchdown reception in the first half. His usage as a hybrid weapon gives him intriguing upside. He has totaled 18 receptions for 306 yards and one touchdowns across 12 games while rushing the ball six times for 78 yards and two scores.
DECEMBER 6 • ROTOWIRE
Sire Gaines - Reaches paydirt in MWC Championship Gaines had nine rushes for 64 yards and one touchdown during Friday's 38-21 Mountain West Championship win over UNLV.
Impact Gaines handled just nine carries compared to Dylan Riley's 21, but he made the most of his totes and finished with just 11 fewer yards on the ground, in addition to one rushing score to Riley's zero. Riley did reach the end zone with a catch out of the backfield, and Gaines looks to be settled into the No. 2 role in Boise State's backfield. He'll have another opportunity to rack up some yardage in the Broncos' bowl game before calling it a season.
DECEMBER 6 • ROTOWIRE
Chase Penry - Strong outing in win Penry recorded three receptions for 96 yards during Friday's 38-21 win versus UNLV.
Impact The senior wideout made a major impact on limited volume, averaging over 30 yards-per-catch and providing Boise State with explosive plays in the passing game. Penry finished with a season-high 96 receiving yards and totaled over 50 yards in three of his last four outings. He will look to build on this performance.
DECEMBER 6 • ROTOWIRE
Maddux Madsen - Totals four scores in win Madsen completed 17 of 31 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns during Friday's 38-21 victory against UNLV. He also had four rushes for 10 yards with one touchdown.
Impact The senior quarterback was the engine behind Boise State's early onslaught, delivering multiple scores before halftime and putting the game well out of reach. Madsen finished with his third game with more than two passing touchdowns and his third highest passing yardage total.
