AP Player of the Week: Iowa State RB Aiden Flora ran for 212 yards and 3 TDs and passed for 2 scores
The Associated Press national player of the week in football for Week 5 of the season:
Aiden Flora, Iowa State
The former walk-on ran for three touchdowns and a career-high 212 yards and passed for two TDs in a 45-42 victory over West Virginia.
His five touchdowns accounted for are most among Football Bowl Subdivision running backs this season, and he's the first FBS running back since at least 1996 with two rushing TDs, two passing TDs and 100 yards rushing in a game.
Flora averaged 9.6 yards on his 22 carries and scored on runs of 24, 63 and 2 yards, with the last one giving the Cyclones the lead for good with 1:57 left. His TD passes went for 46 and 2 yards.
Flora is first in the Big 12 in all-purpose yards with 157 per game and second with 118 yards rushing per game.
Runner-up
Ohio State WR Jeremiah Smith had 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-17 win at Iowa.
Smith broke the program record for career receiving touchdowns, passing Chris Olave’s previous mark of 34. Smith’s 11 receptions moved him past Emeka Egbuka (2021-24) and K.J. Hill (2016-19) to become Ohio State’s career receptions leader. With 207 career catches, Smith needs seven more to enter the Big Ten’s top 10.
Smith leads the nation with 164.6 receiving yards per game and is tied for first with Oregon State's Jesse Legree with nine TD catches.
Honorable mention
Yale QB Dante Reno passed for 298 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-24 win over Merrimack the day after the school announced the death of his father, former Bulldogs coach Tony Reno; Oregon State QB Braden Atkinson was 31 of 34 for 427 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-26 win over Colorado State; Alabama QB Keelon Russell was 16 of 22 for 285 yards and three TDs in a 56-23 win over Mississippi State; Missouri QB Austin Simmons was 23 of 30 for 340 yards and two TDs and Jamal Roberts ran 24 times for 211 yards and three scores in a 45-17 win over Florida; Tennessee RB DeSean Bishop carried 34 times for 220 yards and three TDs in a 24-14 win over Auburn.
