Philadelphia 76ers: The Media Department Just got Better

For the Philadelphia 76ers, it’s pretty clear that they have one of the better media departments in the NBA, well, it just got better.
According to reports, the Philadelphia 76ers were able to nab public relations executive Dave Sholler from the UFC. Scholler served as UFC Vice President of Public Relations, Athlete Marketing and Development while also doing other minute things for the league.
He will join a Sixers media and marketing department that has done a great job branding themselves, running PR campaigns, keeping up with social media, and creating a great fan experience night in and night out.
Sholler will leave the promotion following November’s landmark UFC 205 event, which takes place Nov. 12 at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Sholler will be assuming control of all communications for the Philadelphia 76ers but it’s unknown at the time exactly what his role will be.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for me personally and professionally,” Sholler told MMAjunkie. “It gives me the chance to go home to work for an organization I grew up rooting for, an organization that I’m incredibly passionate about, and an organization I believe is going to add to its storied legacy in the coming years.”
For a Jersey native, this is a huge opportunity and while it may seem like two very different worlds with Sholler coming from UFC, there’s more overlap than first meets the eye. Both sports involve lots of fan entertainment to create an atmosphere and running an NBA game is like an art.
When timeouts and other downtime is going on during games, the team has to have a plan to keep fans entertained whether it may be promotions, performers, or just running a dance cam. Sholler will be able to bring a fresh dynamic to the Philadelphia 76ers front office that should be welcomed during a new season.
In a statement, the chance to return home was too large to turn down for Sholler.
“As the years have gone by, I’ve learned more and more that family is the most important thing in the world, period,” Sholler said. “To be able to raise my daughters back home on the East Coast surrounded by family is something I’m really fortunate to be able to do.
“My time at the UFC was nothing short of a dream come true. It’s an organization that believed in me and gave me the chance to succeed. From the early days traveling the globe with Pete Dropick, Reed Harris and characters like Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone promoting WEC, to today where athletes like Ronda Rousey and Conor McGregor are true crossover stars, I’ve had such an incredible ride. But after such an incredible ride, I know it’s time. It’s time to go home.”
UFC’s sale to WME-IMG has caused major turnover but Sholler claims that the sale had nothing to do with his decision. But whatever his reasons were, he’ll be welcomed into the Philadelphia 76ers front office.
