Philipp Kohlschreiber avenged his defeat by Janko Tipsarevic in the final of the World Team Cup two years ago by beating the Serbian 6-4, 7-6 (5) on Sunday to give host nation Germany a 1-0 lead.

Russia leads Spain 2-0 in another Blue Group contest after Mikhail Youzhny defeated Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-3, 6-4 and Igor Andreev outlasted Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (6) by winning the final five points of the tiebreaker.

Argentina crushed Cup debutantes Kazakhstan 3-0 in the Red Group.

Kohlschreiber took advantage of a slow start by Tipsarevic, who put just 18 percent of his first serves into play as he swiftly fell behind 4-1.
