Heat trade Jarnell Stokes to Pelicans for 2nd-round pick, cap flexibility

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The New Orleans Pelicans have acquired forward Jarnell Stokes and cash from the Miami Heat in exchange for a future second round draft pick.

The move helps Miami gain more flexibility under the NBA's salary cap. It remains unclear if the Pelicans intend to insert the 6-foot-9 Stokes in the lineup this season.

Stokes has played in just 26 NBA games in his first two pro seasons with Memphis and Miami, averaging 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 5.5 minutes per game.

Stokes, who played in college for Tennessee, was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft -- 35th overall -- by Utah.

He has spent 16 games this season with Miami's NBA Development League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, averaging 20.6 points.
