World ice hockey body wins $1.3M compensation case

The International Ice Hockey Federation says it won its case against Swiss club Bern that sought million-dollar damages after a European competition was canceled in 2009.

The IIHF says Switzerland's supreme court upheld its appeal that the Court of Arbitration for Sport should not rule on Bern's compensation claim.

IIHF President Rene Fasel says the governing body believed ''in this particular case CAS was not the adequate authority.''

Bern qualified for the 2009-10 Champions Hockey League, which folded after main sponsor Gazprom withdrew. It wanted $1.3 million to cover lost earnings.

The IIHF's offer to revive the CHL and pay some compensation was later rejected by European leagues.
