The Minnesota Wild and goaltender Jose Theodore have agreed to terms on a one-year contract.

The Wild made the announcement Saturday from Finland, where they will open the regular season against Carolina on Thursday. Theodore was signed to back up starter Niklas Backstrom after Josh Harding went down with a serious knee injury last week.

The 34-year-old Theodore is sixth among active NHL goalies in career games and victories. He was 30-7-7 with a 2.81 goals-against average, a .908 save percentage and one shutout in 47 games for Washington last season.

Theodore won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player and the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender with Montreal in 2002.
