The Minnesota Wild have fired assistant general manager Tom Thompson.

General manager Chuck Fletcher released a brief statement on Tuesday saying the team will not renew Thompson's contract. Fletcher's statement read ``the Wild thanks Tom Thompson for his years of service and many contributions to the organization. We wish Tom future success.''

Fletcher declined further comment.

Thompson was the Wild's chief scout in 1999 and was promoted to assistant general manager by former GM Doug Risebrough in 2002. He has played a big role in the team's draft preparations for years and had a hand in draft picks including Marian Gaborik, Brent Burns and Mikko Koivu.
