Wayne Gretzky to Join Edmonton Oilers Front Office

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Wayne Gretzky is back, and this time, it’s not with the Arizona Coyotes. The legend will reportedly be joining the Edmonton Oilers’ front office as a partner and vice-chairman of its entertainment group.

Wayne Gretzky, “The Great One” is returning to the game in an official capacity. The last time that no.99 was involved in an official capacity, the Phoenix Coyotes (at the time) wound up going bankrupt.

Previously – and we’re talking no more than two days ago – Gretzky had stated that his focus was on his family in an interview with Canada’s CBC. About returning to the game, Gretzky stated that he has two daughters still in school, and was not intent on moving and changing their lives.

But it would appear that Edmonton found a way to get Gretzky involved in some capacity as the hockey world is blowing up over news that Gretzky is coming back.

Just how involved the Great One will be in Edmonton‘s decision-making is unknown. Just how much power Gretzky will retain is not known either. One would expect him to be in charge of player development due to his unbelievable work ethic and skill with the puck, but that’s not the case here.

For some background on the Oilers Entertainment Group (OEG), it had just launched in 2014, and is in ownership of the new stadium that the Oilers will be playing in starting this season, Rogers Place. OEG is also not just for the Edmonton Oilers, but for a number of other sports clubs in Edmonton, such as the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL, and the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL.

If the vice-chairman role is correct, then Gretzky’s role will be almost par with that of Kevin Lowe, who was also named as a vice-chairman.

It’s an exciting time for the Edmonton Oilers organization and fans seeing Wayne Gretzky return.
