Vancouver Canucks forward Jake Virtanen will not face supplemental discipline for an incident in last night’s win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

According to NBC, Vancouver Canucks forward Jake Virtanen will not be hearing from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety after an incident in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

As seen above, Virtanen shoved the head of Hurricanes forward Joakim Nordstrom into the boards early in the third period of Sunday’s win. There was no penalty on the play and Nordstrom finished the game with 14 minutes of ice-time.

There is history for this type of incident as Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber was fined $2,500 in April of 2012 for shoving Henrik Zetterberg‘s head in to the glass.

Virtanen does have a history with the Department of Player Safety. Last season, he was suspended two games for a late hit on San Jose Sharks defenseman Roman Polak. Despite those factors, he will escape punsihment and will be available for Tuesday’s match-up with the St. Louis Blues.

The Canucks will need Virtanen’s size and speed on Tuesday when they face their toughest competition of the season so far as the Blues come to town, so this is certainly good news for the Canucks. Virtanen hasn’t been incredibly noticeable for his physical play in the first two games, that will need to change for Tuesday’s match-up. The Blues are currently undefeated through three games with wins over Chicago, Minnesota and the New York Rangers.

The sixth-overall pick of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft was also a victim of a questionable hit by Calgary Flames forward Lance Bouma in Saturday’s home opener. Virtanen appeared to be shaken up on the play but did stay in the game. Bouma was not penalized for the hit and it does not appear he will face supplemental discipline either.
