Vancouver Canucks G Ryan Miller Sensational in Win over Leafs

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Miller faced 40 shots as the Vancouver Canucks held on to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 in a shootout for their 11th win of the year.

It wasn’t always pretty, but the Vancouver Canucks avenged their last loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In their first game back on Nov. 5, Ryan Miller was not good, allowing all six goals in the loss. He made up for that loss with a stellar performance tonight, making 38 saves.

And as expected, Erik Gudbranson and Matt Martin came together for a spirited fight:

Gudbranson gave Canucks fans the reckoning they wanted. Meanwhile, Miller’s heroics helped Vancouver survive a frantic overtime period. They were able to win the game in a shootout.

Recap:

Some poetic justice, as Daniel Sedin himself opened the scoring against the Leafs. On a point shot, of all things:

Henrik Sedin picked up an assist, which puts him only 14 points back of 1000. Not too much longer.

Sven Baertschi extended the Canucks’ lead in the second period. After taking a pass from Alexandre Burrows, he tried to deke around Frederik Andersen.

The move didn’t quite end up as planned but…

…all’s well that ends well.

With the Gudbranson/Martin fisticuffs out of the way, the Toronto Maple Leafs turned the game in their favor. The fired 26 shots at the Canucks goal in the second and third periods.

James van Riemsdyk got the Leafs on the board in the second period:

Vancouver’s penalty kill surrendered a goal for the first time in eight games.

In the third period, Auston Matthews tied it up early:

It’s Miller Time

After the tying goal, chances came fast and furious.

Miller denied Matthews a second goal:

Later on, he got a little help from Troy Stecher, who knocked a puck away at the goal line:

The Canucks goaltender had to be great in overtime as well. Toronto outshot Vancouver 7-1 in the extra period. Miller turned all seven aside, setting up the winner.

Markus Granlund scored, and Miller stopped Matthews’ attempt.

Then Bo Horvat scored what proved to be the shootout winner:

Any fans who expected to watch a bloodbath in this game were disappointed. The two teams only combined for 22 penalty minutes, most of which came from the Gudbranson/Martin fight.

Vancouver put up 25 hits to the Leafs 24 — modest totals.

But those who wished to see a bit of Sedinery, more clutch play from Horvat, and a great goaltending performance from Miller, were not disappointed.

The Vancouver Canucks depart for a five-game eastern road trip starting next week. They will take on Cory Schneider and the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
