Toronto Maple Leafs: Goals, Assists, and Penalties
“Goals, Assists, and Penalties” is a collection of NHL and Toronto Maple Leafs news, and my opinions on the subjects.
“Goals” are deemed to be something positive, “Penalties” are deemed to be something negative, and “Assists” are generally something positive but often could be better about the Toronto Maple Leafs. Enjoy.
Penalty: Joe Bowen should be the play by play guy for every games on TV until the day he dies. Anything less than that and the fans are not getting full value for their dollar.
Goal: Matthews Vs. McDavid tomorrow night.
Penalty: Those who think Marner shouldn’t be a guarantee to play 10+ games this season. He is legitimately one of their best players.
Goal: Calder X3. Marner, Matthews, Nylander could all be in consideration for the Calder nomination this season. If it wasn’t for Laine, they might have good reason to think the three of them could get all three Calder nominations. But there is always a few sneaky rookies that you

never expect to perform as well as they do. However, there is still a decent chance that two of them get nominated come seasons end. Also look out for Zack Werenski and Jimmy Vesey.
Goal: Nikita Zaitsev. He is solid. Good second pairing guy. I hope the Toronto Maple Leafs re-sign him.
Assist: Reilly. He looked amazing at the Worlds with Ekblad and then Parayko. We need a #1 defensemen. Reilly is a #2. I thought he might change my mind after the Worlds, but through 9 games, he is no #1. That is not to say he is bad, he just cannot be the #1 defenseman if we want to ever compete for a Cup. Where are we going to find a #1?
Assist: If the Maple Leafs won the lottery again, should they draft centerman Patrick Nolan? OR draft the top D man? Tough call.
Penalty: The ice. Watching the game in Brooklyn vs the Brooklyn Islanders (purposely said), the ice was worse than it ever has been inside the Copps Coliseum. Shame on the ownership to put their team in such a pathetic situation. Now they are looking to move back, already? Horrible horrible horrible ownership. I wonder what that is like…
Goal: Craig Anderson, remarkable. Anderson got his second shutout of the season Sunday night vs the Oilers just a couple of days after finding out his wife has cancer. It was an emotional night. Nicolle Anderson has all of our support. For more, click here.
Penalty: 0. Zero, that is the number of games won by the Maple Leafs on the road in October. Anyone that thought they might compete this season for a playoff spot should be thinking twice.
Goal: Mitch Marner has been unbeleivable. After the Rookie Camp this season, I thought he would be lucky to make the full time roster. Once preseason started he was as I expected him to be. But once the regular season started, he might have been the Leafs best player through 9 games.
Assist: PK for Weber trade. Shea Weber is lighting it up for the Canadiens shadowing Subbans solid start to the season in Nashville. Win/Win.
Penalty: People giving Garth Snow and the Islanders a hard time for keeping 3 goalies on their roster. Who cares. It is Garth Snow, of course he is going to do something different. If people want to complain about players not getting played…#freeCorrado.
Goal: Andy’s comeback. OK, it may not be a comeback, but Frederik Andersen is now showing LEaf Nation the type of goalie that he really is. I am happy to not have heard much Andersen bashing in the last week. He is a solid goaltender, one that is good enough to help win you a Cup. Lets be supportive and cheer him on because whether you like it or not, he is here for 5 years! We should probably invest in his confidence.
Under Review: Babcock and his four lines. He likes playing Matt Martin, Matt Hunwick, and Roman Polak a lot more than he probably should when losing. But then again he is probably doing it to protect a bunch of the kids. Do I like playing four lines all game and 3 defensive pairings? I’m not sure yet. It will be interesting to see if this is still the case in a few years when the Leafs are competitive.
Under Review: Today is special. You get two “Under Reviews”. Have you all heard the new Maple Leafs Anthem made by Deadmau5? (Yes, that is how you spell it for those unfamiliar and over 30). My first reaction was that it was horrible. But tomorrow night I will be at my first game of the season and will hear it live. I will withhold my final judgement until then.
