6:55 p.m.

The New Jersey Devils traded forward Stefan Matteau to the Montreal Canadiens for winger Devante Smith-Pelly as GM Ray Shero got bigger with a focus on the future. The Devils had a hole on the right side after sending Lee Stempniak to the Boston Bruins.

''He's got to take advantage of this'' Shero said of Smith-Pelly.

Stempniak was New Jersey's leading scorer, but the Devils managed to recoup serious value for a player who they signed to a professional tryout agreement prior to training camp. Stempniak, 33, has 16 goals and 25 assists.

''He's done a fantastic job as we all know and been a great story,'' Shero said on a conference call. ''He'll be a great addition for Boston like he was for us.''

6:17 p.m.

Once goaltender Niklas Backstrom waived his no-trade clause, the Minnesota Wild completed a trade to send him to the Calgary Flames.

The Flames got Backstrom and a sixth-round pick in the 2016 draft in exchange for forward David Jones. In Jones, the Wild get another forward to help them keep up with the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference playoff race.

Brett Sutter might get a chance to see if he can crack his own father's lineup.

The Los Angeles Kings acquired Sutter from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for forward Scott Sabourin in a swap of minor-league forwards.

Sutter is the oldest son of Darryl Sutter, the Kings' two-time Stanley Cup-winning coach.

Although Brett Sutter has 60 games of NHL experience over seven seasons, he has spent this year with Minnesota's AHL affiliate in Iowa. The journeyman forward is expected to be assigned to the Kings' AHL affiliate in Ontario.

Almost three hours after the deadline passed, more trades were still trickling out.

The Anaheim Ducks announced they sent winger Patrick Maroon to the Edmonton Oilers for defensive prospect Martin Gernat and a 2016 fourth-round pick. The Nashville Predators also announced they got minor-league defenseman Corey Potter from the Arizona Coyotes for future considerations.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks held onto defenseman Dan Hamhuis and the Toronto Maple Leafs held onto forward Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau despite those players' abilities to become unrestricted free agents July 1.

4:25 p.m.

A handful of trades got done just under the wire before 3 p.m. Eastern, including two by the Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins.

Anaheim got winger Jamie McGinn from the Buffalo Sabres for a conditional third-round pick in the 2016 draft and forward Brandon Pirri from the Florida Panthers for a six-round pick.

McGinn has 14 goals and 13 assists in 63 games this season with the Sabres. He will add depth and scoring for the Ducks, who are back in Stanley Cup contention with eight consecutive wins.

The Bruins flexed their muscles at the deadline by acquiring defenseman John-Michael Liles from the Carolina Hurricanes and winger Lee Stempniak from the Devils.

Carolina received prospect Anthony Camara and two draft picks - a third-rounder this year and a fifth-rounder in 2017 - for the 35-year-old Liles. New Jersey got a fourth-round pick in 2016 and a second in 2017 for Stempniak, who they originally signed to a tryout for training camp in September.

3:45 p.m.

By trading John-Michael Liles, the Hurricanes continued to load up on draft picks: In just over 24 hours, they acquired five picks and will have 11 in this June's draft, including seven in the first three rounds.

Carolina got a second-round pick in each of the next two drafts from the New York Rangers for captain Eric Staal.

3:18 p.m.

The Dallas Stars paid a big price to improve their defense by acquiring Kris Russell from Calgary. Dallas sent defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka, forward prospect Brett Pollock and a conditional 2016 second-round pick to the Flames.

That pick becomes a first-rounder if the Stars advance to the Western Conference final and Russell dresses in 50 percent of the games in the first two rounds.

Russell, 28, is an elite shot-blocker who has 174 in 51 games this season. The pending free agent has four goals and 11 assists.

Jokipakka is 24 years old and has 91 games of NHL experience. Pollock, a second-round pick in 2014, plays for the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL.

2:05 p.m.

With nine teams fighting for eight playoff spots in the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche are trying to load up to make sure they're one of them.

The Avalanche acquired winger Mikkel Boedker from the Arizona Coyotes and defenseman Eric Gelinas from the New Jersey Devils. They sent veteran forward Alex Tanguay, defensive prospect Kyle Wood and forward prospect Conner Bleackley to Arizona for Boedker and a 2017 third-round pick to New Jersey for Gelinas.

Boedker, a pending unrestricted free agent, has 13 goals and 26 assists for 39 point this season. Gelinas has a goal and five assists in 34 games.

1:15 p.m.

Mike Brown's new team is coming to him.

A day after being waived by San Jose, Brown was claimed off waivers by the Montreal Canadiens on Monday, just hours before they visited the Sharks.

Brown had one goal and two assists in 44 games for San Jose but was expendable after the Sharks traded for forward Nick Spaling from Toronto last week.

1:05 p.m.

New Your Rangers coach Alain Vigneault ticked off Eric Staal's attributes Monday - his size, his speed, his skill, his versatility. But he says Staal's winning track record may be the most important addition for a team hoping to make a deep playoff run.

The Rangers dealt two second-round draft picks and a prospect for the former Carolina Hurricanes captain.

Vigneault says he views Staal, the older brother of Rangers defenseman Marc Staal, as a center, but did stress he could shift to left wing.

12:55 p.m.

Daniel Winnik said he was ''pretty shocked'' to be traded from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Washington Capitals. Winnik signed a two-year deal with Toronto in the offseason and didn't expect to be dealt until the 2016-17 season.

Winnik was traded from the Maple Leafs to the Pittsburgh Penguins at the trade deadline last year. He told reporters: ''I wasn't quite sure if I was going to get traded or where and definitely wasn't expecting to come to the Capitals.''

---

12:45 p.m.

NHL teams were busy on the waiver wire on deadline day and no one more so than the Edmonton Oilers. The team announced it claimed forward Adam Cracknell from the Vancouver Canucks and defenseman Adam Pardy from the Winnipeg Jets.

The Montreal Canadiens announced they claimed tough guy Mike Brown off waivers from the San Jose Sharks. The New Jersey Devils confirmed they claimed defenseman David Warsovsky from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Zac Rinaldo, who has a hearing with the NHL department of player safety for a hit on Tampa Bay's Cedric Paquette, cleared waivers and the Boston Bruins assigned him to the American Hockey League.

Edmonton also signed a pair of rookies, defenseman Brandon Davidson and goalie Laurent Brossoit, to two-year contract extensions.

Noon

Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella was unsure if general manager Jarmo Kekalainen was planning on being active at the trade deadline.

Facing a Rangers team Monday night that added Eric Staal in a blockbuster deal, Tortorella noted the uncertainty for teams that scheduled to play on deadline day.

Tortorella said: ''It's more difficult for teams playing on the deadline day. I have my thoughts on that but I better keep them to myself.''

11 a.m.

General manager Tim Murray was expected to be active before the NHL trade deadline with several players in the final years of their contracts on the block. The group includes forwards Jamie McGinn and David Legwand, sparingly used defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo and backup goalie Chad Johnson.

The Sabres aren't scheduled to be back on the ice until Tuesday, before the team's home game against the Edmonton Oilers. The game will mark the first meeting between Edmonton's Connor McDavid and Buffalo's Jack Eichel, the two centers selected first and second in last year's draft.

---

10:45 a.m.

The future is now for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who recalled prospects William Nylander, Kasperi Kapanen and Nikita Soshinkov to replenish their roster after several trades.

The 19-year-old Nylander is the organization's top prospect and was set to make his NHL debut Monday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have said they're not trading pending free agent Steven Stamkos before the 3 p.m. deadline.

---

10:35 a.m.

The Arizona Coyotes have acquired winger Sergei Plotnikov from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for prospect Matthias Plachta and a conditional seventh-round pick in 2017.

The deal was announced hours before the NHL trade deadline. Signed out of the KHL last offseason, the 25-year-old Plotnikov has just two assists in 32 games. He is set to be a restricted free agent this summer.
