Former Sabres and Islanders coach Ted Nolan has been hired to lead Latvia's national team.

The Latvian Ice Hockey Federation said Wednesday that it expects to sign a contract with the former NHL coach of the year within a couple of days.

The 53-year-old Nolan was selected from a list of five candidates and is expected to arrive in Riga at the end of the month.

Nolan was 147-140-19-21 in the NHL, winning the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach in 1997 with Buffalo.
