Saturday's NHL Capsules
PITTSBURGH (AP) Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist scored power-play goals 55 seconds apart in the second period, and the Pittsburgh Penguins gave the New York Islanders their first loss of the season, 3-1 on Saturday night.
The Islanders (4-1) had been the Eastern Conference's last unbeaten team.
Hornqvist, who assisted on Malkin's goal, added an empty-net tally with 1:20 left to seal the Penguins' win. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby had two assists, including the 500th of his career.
Marc-Andre Fleury made 30 saves in the win.
Thomas Hickey staked the Islanders to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but New York failed to post its first 5-0 start. Jaroslav Halak stopped 35 shots.
LIGHTNING 4, CANUCKS 2
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Steven Stamkos scored two goals and added an assist, and Ben Bishop made 30 saves as Tampa Bay handed Vancouver its first loss.
Ryan Callahan added a goal and an assist for Tampa Bay (3-1-1), and Alex Killhorn also scored. Ondrej Palat had two assists.
Chris Higgins and Alexander Edler scored for Vancouver (3-1), which had 20 saves from backup goalie Eddie Lack in his first start. The Canucks were the last NHL team to lose this season.
Vancouver opened with two wins against Edmonton - including Friday night's road victory - and one over Calgary, but ran into trouble against one of the Eastern Conference's best teams.
The Canucks had a home sellout streak snapped at 474 games. The previous non-sellout in Vancouver was Nov. 12, 2002.
SHARKS 4, DEVILS 2
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Logan Couture had a goal and two assists, and Antti Niemi made 35 saves as San Jose topped pesky New Jersey.
Joe Pavelski added a goal and an assist, and Joe Thornton iced the game with an empty net goal - his 1,200th NHL point - as the Sharks won for the fourth time in five games. They have earned 9 of 10 points, losing only in a shootout to the New York Islanders.
Patrick Marleau added a goal for Sharks.
Mike Cammalleri and Adam Henrique gave the sellout crowd of 16,592 something to cheer about, scoring in a 4:10 span to pull within New Jersey one with 7:50 to play.
Niemi made the lead stand with excelling stops on Cammalleri, Henrique and Damien Brunner before Thornton scored his first of the season with 1:14 to play.
Cory Schneider made 28 saves for the Devils in their home opener, including a glove stop on a penalty shot by Tommy Wingels with 3:44 left.
BRUINS 4, SABRES 0
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Niklas Svedberg made 32 saves in his first NHL shutout, and Boston blanked Buffalo.
It was just the third career start for Svedberg, who replaced Tuukka Rask in the third period of Boston's loss Thursday at Montreal.
Dougie Hamilton, Zdeno Chara, Torey Krug and Carl Soderberg scored for the Bruins (3-4). All four goals came at even strength, and three were scored against Buffalo's top line.
The Sabres (1-5) were shut out in consecutive games for the first time since October 2003. Buffalo went 0 for 7 on the power play, falling to 0 for 18 on the season.
Jhonas Enroth made 31 saves.
The Bruins' first three goals were scored by defensemen.
CAPITALS 2, PANTHERS 1, SO
WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington scored on all three shots in the shootout, and Justin Peters made 20 saves in his start this season to lift the Capitals over Florida.
Jason Chimera scored his first goal of the young season for the Capitals (3-0-2), who improved to 10-0-1 in their last 11 meetings against their former division rival.
Brad Boyes' power play goal for Florida (1-3-1) tied the game early in the third period.
Each team scored on its first shootout attempt, and Nicklas Backstrom then put the Capitals ahead 2-1. After Peters stopped Jussi Jokinen, Alex Ovechkin scored the clincher for Washington.
In a matchup of backups, Peters outdueled Al Montoya. The Panthers have scored five goals in five games. Washington outshot Florida 28-21 overall.
RED WINGS 1, MAPLE LEAFS 0, OT
DETROIT (AP) - Henrik Zetterberg scored the lone goal 4:50 into overtime to give Detroit a victory over Toronto and a sweep of the teams' home-and-home series.
Zetterburg streaked down the right side and sent Niklas Kronwall's centering pass over Jonathan Bernier's shoulder.
Jonas Gustavson made 30 saves for his sixth career shutout. Bernier stopped 31 shots, but sustained his third loss of the season.
Tomas Tatar almost ended the game 80 seconds into overtime but his shot past a distracted Bernier nicked the left post.
The Red Wings won 4-1 on Friday night in Toronto.
SENATORS 3, BLUE JACKETS 2
OTTAWA (AP) - Mike Hoffman made up for missing a penalty shot by scoring the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period to give Ottawa a win over Columbus.
David Legwand and Erik Karlsson also scored, and Robin Lehner stopped 38 shots to help Ottawa earn its fourth straight win after losing its opener.
Nick Foligno and David Savard scored for the Blue Jackets. Curtis McElhinney allowed two goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Sergei Bobrovsky, who gave up one goal on 18 shots.
Columbus scored two goals 41 seconds apart in the second period to tie the game.
Ottawa had made it 2-0 at the 7-minute mark on Karlsson's goal that was reviewed after McElhinney was knocked over by Nick Foligno as he made the save and slid into the back of the net. The goal stood, but it was the end of the night for McElhinney, who was injured on the play.
CANADIENS 3, AVALANCHE 2
MONTREAL (AP) - P.K. Subban scored twice and Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and an assist in Montreal's victory over Colorado.
Carey Price made 32 saves to help the Canadiens improve to 5-1.
Alex Tanguay and Matt Duchene scored for Colorado, and Calvin Pickard made 33 saves in his first NHL start. The Avalanche went 1-2-1 on their trip to drop to 1-4-1 overall.
The Avalanche turned to Pickard after Semyon Varlamov aggravated a groin injury and backup Reto Berra was hurt in Thursday night in a 5-3 loss to Ottawa.
BLACKHAWKS 2, PREDATORS 1, OT
CHICAGO (AP) - Jonathan Toews scored a short-handed breakaway goal at 3:26 of overtime to lift Chicago over Nashville.
With Patrick Sharp off for tripping, Toews stole the puck from Nashville's Roman Josi just inside the Chicago blue line. He raced down left wing, cut to the slot and was stopped by Carter Hutton on his first shot, but Toews pushed the rebound under Hutton's pads.
Johnny Oduya scored his first goal of the season in the first period for Chicago. Corey Crawford had 19 saves.
Shea Weber scored his third goal for Nashville, and Hutton stopped 35 shots. Hutton made his first start of the season in place of Pekka Rinne, who started the Predators' first four games.
FLYERS 6, STARS 5, OT
DALLAS (AP) - Claude Giroux scored a power-play goal 2:49 into overtime to give Philadelphia a come-from-behind victory.
Sean Couturier, Brayden Schenn, Andrew MacDonald, Jakub Voracek and Michael Raffl scored in regulation for the Flyers. Giroux's game-winner came 40 seconds after Dallas' Trevor Daley was penalized for hooking. It was Philadelphia's third power-play goal in the game.
Daley scored twice, Jason Spezza had a goal and three assists, Eric Cole and Jamie Benn also scored, and Tyler Seguin had four assists for the Stars. Kari Lehtonen made 30 saves but fell to 0-11-2 against the Flyers.
The Stars led 4-2 heading to the third period, before MacDonald and Voracek scored to tie it with 5:46 left in regulation. Spezza regained Dallas' lead 40 seconds later, but Raffl tied it again with 3:53 remaining.
BLUES 6, COYOTES 1
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Jaden Schwartz completed his first NHL hat trick with 3 seconds to play, goalie Jake Allen was strong in his first NHL start in two seasons, and St. Louis dominated Arizona.
Jori Lehtera scored his first career goal and had two assists for the Blues.
David Backes and Alexander Steen each had a goal and an assist, and Vladimir Tarasenko assisted on three goals. Lauri Korpikoski ruined Allen's shutout bid with 9:32 left.
Backes' goal, Lehtera's goal, and Schwartz's first score came on power plays.
Schwartz, who also had an assist, made a shot from the point just before the game ended. Allen finished with 24 saves.
Beleaguered goalie Mike Smith had 30 saves for Arizona. Smith has allowed 15 goals in his three games. Allen, the AHL's top goalie last season, made his first NHL start since April 21, 2013.
