The Buffalo Sabres have hired Randy Cunneyworth as a pro scout.

The former Montreal Canadiens interim head coach is no stranger to the Sabres organization. Cunneyworth was drafted by Buffalo in 1980 and played 35 games for the club over two stints with the team during a career that included parts of 16 NHL seasons with six teams.

Cunneyworth was named interim head coach of Montreal when Jacques Martin was fired in 2011 and posted an 18-23-9 record. He also spent two seasons as an assistant under John Anderson with the Atlanta Thrashers.

He began his coaching career as a player coach with the Rochester Americans, Buffalo's American Hockey League affiliate, and was named head coach in 2000. He held the position for eight years.
