Forward Brandon Saad, one of the NHL's top draft prospects, has been among the final seven players cut as the United States set its roster for the start of the World Junior Hockey championships.

Saad had no points in two exhibition games this week, including a 3-2 shootout loss to the Czech Republic on Tuesday. NHL Central Scouting has the Saginaw Spirit player ranked as the Ontario Hockey League's No. 2 prospect for next year's draft.

Also cut were forwards Connor Brickley, Rocco Grimaldi and Matt Nieto, and defensemen Adam Clendening, Jamie Oleksiak and Philip Samuelsson, the son of former NHL player Ulf Samuelsson.

The tournament opens at Buffalo on Sunday, with the U.S. playing Finland.
