Ruling in Wideman appeal expected week of March 7
DENVER (AP) NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly says a ruling on the appeal of suspended Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman isn't anticipated until the week of March 7.
The National Hockey League Players' Association requested an appeal after NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman upheld Wideman's 20-game suspension for cross-checking a linesman on Jan. 27.
Asked if he was troubled it was taking so long, Daly said: ''It's what the system contemplates. ... I don't think either party has a concern with the process itself.''
Wideman knocked down Don Henderson during a game against Nashville. Wideman was checked hard into the boards, then banged his stick on the ice before knocking down Henderson in front of Nashville's bench. Wideman said he was in pain and was just trying to get off the ice.
