Lindy Ruff is behind the Buffalo Sabres' bench for his 1,000th game as their coach.

The 50-year-old Ruff is the 18th NHL coach to reach 1,000 games, and the third to do it with one team.

His Sabres were playing the New Jersey Devils in Newark on Wednesday night.

Ruff is the 88th person to lead the same professional major sport team for 1,000 games. There have been seven NBA coaches and 78 major league baseball managers who have accomplished the feat, according a Sabres' release.
