RIT beats New Hampshire to advance to Frozen Four
Tyler Brenner scored two goals, Jared DeMichiel made 24 saves and Rochester Institute of Technology advanced to the Frozen Four for the first time, beating New Hampshire 6-2 on Saturday night in the NCAA East Regional final.
In just its fifth season as a Division I program, fourth-seeded RIT (28-11-1) extended the nation's longest winning streak to 12 games.
RIT, a 2-1 winner over Denver on Friday night, will face West Regional champion Wisconsin in the national semifinals April 8 at Ford Field in Detroit.
Chris Haltigin and Tyler Mazzei each had a goal and an assist, Brent Alexin and Stevan Matic also scored, and Andrew Favot had three assists for the Tigers.
Phil DeSimone and Blake Kessel scored for New Hampshire (18-14-7).
Haltigin opened the scoring with 5:50 left in the first period, firing a wrist shot from the point that got through a screen and past goalie Brian Foster.
The Wildcats tied it with 58.6 seconds left in the first on DeSimone's deflection.
RIT took control in the second period, scoring three times on six shots in 1:34 span. Brenner beat Foster between the pads with 6:37 left, Alexin scored off a rebound 13 seconds later, and Matic capped the spree with a wrist shot.
Brenner added a goal in the third, and Mazzei had an empty-netter.
