The Detroit Red Wings have recalled defenseman Brendan Smith from Grand Rapids of the AHL.

Detroit announced the move before Thursday night's game against the Calgary Flames. Smith is still serving a suspension for a hit to the head of Chicago's Ben Smith during the exhibition season. Smith was suspended for the final three preseason games and five more in the regular season. He sat out Thursday's game and will have to miss one more for Detroit.

The 22-year-old Smith, chosen with the 27th pick in the 2007 draft, has two assists and 20 penalty minutes in seven games with Grand Rapids this season.
