Boston University hockey coach Jack Parker is retiring after 40 years on a job in which he won almost 900 games and three national championships.
Parker made the announcement at a news conference at the Agganis Arena, the sparkling hockey arena he helped build.
BU has no football team, and its basketball program has always been secondary to the hockey team that is a perennial powerhouse. Parker led the school to NCAA titles in 1978, 1995 and 2009. In all, Parker has won 894 games — third most in NCAA history, and the most for a coach at a single school. He has also led the Terriers to 21 Beanpot titles.
Although Parker has been lauded for the graduation rate of his players and their success in the NHL, the program was damaged last season by sexual assault charges against two players and the ensuing report that said there was a "culture of sexual entitlement" on the team.
