Panarin powers Rangers to 3-1 win over Islanders
Artemi Panarin scored twice to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-1 preseason win over the rival Islanders on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.
Panarin, the Rangers' big free-agent addition this summer, played with both linemates Mika Zibanejad and Pavel Buchnevich for the first time. Buchnevich had an assist on Panarin's first goal, and Zibanejad assisted on his empty-netter with 16 seconds left.
Vitali Kravtsov also scored for Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist started and stopped all 13 shots he faced, and Alexandar Georgiev had 16 saves on 17 shots.
Jordan Eberle got his fourth goal of the preseason in the third period for the Islanders. Thomas Greiss stopped 27 shots.
Kravtsov, the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft, opened the scoring at 2:07 of the second period, and Panarin made it 2-0 at 8:43.
BARKOV LEADS PANTHERS PAST LIGHTNING
In Sunrise, Florida, Aleksander Barkov had two goals and an assist to help the Florida Panthers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-3.
Jonathan Huberdeau, Dominic Toninato, Denis Malgin and Frank Vatrano also scored for Florida. Sergei Bobrovsky started and stopped 12 of 14 shots in his half of the game, and Chris Driedger finished with seven saves.
Alexander Volkov, Anthony Cirelli and Mikhail Sergachev scored for Tampa Bay, and Andrei Vasilevskiy gave up all six goals on 24 shots.
STARS EDGE BLUES 2-1
In St. Louis, Jason Dickinson and John Klingberg scored to lead the Dallas Stars to a 2-1 win over the defending champion Blues.
Dickinson got the Stars on the scoreboard at 7:56 of the first, and Klingberg's power-play goal with 3:24 left in the second made it 2-0.
Ryan O'Reilly cut the Blues' deficit in half with a tip-in with 4:43 left in the third.
Landon Bow started in goal for Dallas and stoped all 15 shots he faced in the first two periods. Jake Oettinger had 13 saves in the third.
Jake Allen had 16 shots for St. Louis, who earlier in the day acquired defenseman Justin Faulk in a trade with Carolina.
The Blues, who then signed Faulk to seven-year, $45.5 million contract extension, also received a 2020 fifth round pick from the Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Joel Edmundson, prospect forward Dominik Bokk, and a 2021 seventh-round pick.
FLAMES BLANK JETS 2-0
In Calgary, Alberta, Sean Monahan and Sam Bennett scored 33 seconds apart in the second period, and the Flames beat the Winnipeg Jets 2-0.
Monahan scored a power-play goal to get the Flames on the scoreboard with 6:23 left in the middle period. Bennett doubled the lead with 5:50 to go.
David Rittich had 20 saves for the Flames.
Eric Comrie started in goal for the Jets and had 18 saves in the first two periods, and Mikhail Berdin stopped all 13 shots he faced in the third.
SILFVERBERG, GIBSON LEAD DUCKS PAST SHARKS
In Anaheim, California, Jakob Silfverberg had a goal and an assist, John Gibson made 31 saves, and the Ducks beat the San Jose Sharks 4-1.
Brendan Guhle also had a goal and an assist, and Andreas Martinen and Derek Grant also scored for the Ducks.
Jonny Brodzinski scored for San Jose, and Aaron Dell made 33 saves.
HILL, COYOTES SPOIL MCDAVID'S PRESEASON DEBUT
In Edmonton, Alberta, Adin Hill made 38 saves to help the Arizona Coyotes beat the Oilers 4-2.
Lawson Crouse, Michael Bunting, Michael Grabner and Derek Stepan each scored for the Coyotes. Clayton Keller, Vinnie Hinostraza, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Kyle Capobianco each had an assist.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Riley Sheahan scored for the Oilers, who had Connor McDavid back in the lineup for the first time since suffering a knee injury in Edmonton's final game last season.
Mike Smith started and gave up two goals on 17 shots in the first two periods. Mikko Koskinen stopped 14 of 16 shots he faced in the third.
