NHL ref gets clocked trying to break up scrum

Published Mar. 5, 2014 9:52 a.m. ET

NHL linesman Andy McElman didn’t wake up Tuesday morning thinking he would get punched in the face, but that’s exactly what happened to the poor guy during the Colorado Avalanche-Chicago Blackhawks game.

Chicago defenseman Michal Rozsival and Colorado’s Maxime Talbot got into a scuffle after Rozsival cross-checked him in the back after a whistle blew during the third period. The Blackhawk soon found himself surrounded by a sea of Avs jerseys, but as he was attempting to shake off his opponents, McElman was skating over to break it up.

In Rozsival’s efforts to break free from Talbot, he landed a punch straight to McElman’s face that knocked the referee down to the ice.
