New York Islanders Top 25 Under 25: Kyle Schempp #22
Eyes on Isles look at the top 25 under 25 for the New York Islanders continues with number 22; Kyle Schempp. After three defensemen and a goaltender, this is our first forward.
Kyle Schempp was drafted by the New York Islanders in the sixth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Schempp’s trajectory to the NHL is going to be linear, but his projected role at the senior level could still see him crack the lineup.
Schempp’s plied his trade at Ferris State University of the WCHA where’s he’s put up 66 points in 121 games. So just looking at those numbers it’s clear that we’re not looking a Patrick Kane elite talent.
Although, who knows. Schempp’s played but two AHL games, so when it comes to playing against adult talent we have no idea how Schempp can perform. Jamie Benn was drafted in the 5th round (129th overall) and now he’s leading NHL forwards.

Schempp’s Ceiling
Thinking the Islanders somehow pulled off the biggest draft day heist with Schempp is so incredibly improbable. It’s entirely possible, but scouting has gotten to a point where these draft surprises are incredibly rare. If Schempp is any player on a current NHL roster it’s Torrey Mitchell over Jamie Benn.
Schempp has yet t prove he’s that elite level talent at any stage of his career. He can score, just look at his stats. He just hasn’t excelled at any one level. Even Hockey’s Future agrees: “He projects as a lower-line forward with some scoring ability at that level.”
Schempp’s ceiling seems to be a fourth line player with depth scoring. A player that can chip in with 20-30 points in a season.
We’ll see if this pigeon hole changes in 2016-17. Schempp is likely to start the year playing in the AHL with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He featured very briefly last season, getting two points in his only two games with the Sound Tigers.
Schempp’s got his hockey future already capped for him. He’s not supposed to achieve more than a fourth liner. Breaking that cap is going to be Schempp’s motivation as he suits up for the Sound Tigers this season. This season is going to show Isles fans just what he can be.
